History Of Our Chapter NameOur chapter name proudly honors the history of the San Gabriel River and the habitation of Williamson County from the 1700s to present day. Clara Stearns Scarborough relates that the early inhabitants, the Tonkawa Indians, appropriately named the Williamson County area Takachue Ponetsu, or Land of Good Water. In 1716, a Spanish expedition commanded by Diego Ramon named San Gabriel River, Rio de San Francisco Xavier, which was also related in the journals of the 1721 Spanish expedition of Marques de Aguayo. Stephen F. Austin, on his map of 1829, mistakenly labeled the river San Javriel, a spurious name that evolved into the present one. In the early 1700s, several Spanish missions were established along the banks of the San Gabriel River, in an effort to Christianize the Indian tribes living in the area. These missions were abandoned by the mid-1750s, and the mission buildings soon fell into ruin. By the end of the 19th century, little trace of them remained. Throughout the centuries, the life giving properties of the San Gabriel River launched a history of pioneer settlements in Williamson County, resulting in present-day communities and towns. Of special significance are the expanding cities of Cedar Park and Leander to accommodate the current population increases. San Gabriel Chapter NSDAR has grown significantly since its inception in early 2017. A strong, healthy chapter has been formed, with chapter members from a diverse population throughout Williamson County and central Texas.
San Gabriel Chapter NSDAR OrganizesThe sixth new chapter in the administration of Texas State Regent Judy Callaway Ostler was the San Gabriel Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. The chapter was officially chartered by the NSDAR National Board of Management on October 5, 2017. On October 1, 2017, at the Twin Creeks Country Club in Cedar Park, the San Gabriel Chapter held its organizing meeting. Mrs. Ostler installed the new chapter officers, and State Organizing Secretary Marcy Carter Lovick inducted the new members. Also in attendance were a majority of the State Executive Board and several special guests. Our chapter began when four ladies Sally Hunt, Lee Lloyd, Carole Lowe, and Caroline Miller recognized that the western side of Williamson County was greatly underserved, as there was a large gap in coverage between the two Georgetown and four Austin chapters. With the explosive growth in northwest Austin, Cedar Park and Leander, it has turned out to be a perfect choice. Nobody had any idea just how underserved the area was until they started letting the community know there was a new chapter forming. The response has been wonderful, said Chapter Regent Sally Hunt. There truly is a need for a chapter here. The new San Gabriel Chapter had 45 organizing members. A little over half were members who transferred from other chapters in Texas or out of state and the remainder were newly verified members. Special heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who helped build this chapter, transfer members and new members, and all of those along the way who supported this endeavor we would not be here without you!
