Hopkins County Courthouse

Constructed of natural limestone and granite, the Hopkins County Courthouse was built in 1895, at a cost of $75,000. With the exterior remaining largely unchanged, the edifice underwent a major interior and structural reconstruction in 2002. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977



Though once inhabited by the Caddo Indian Tribe, the first evidence of caucasian settlers was 1837. Formally established in March of 1846, Hopkins County is located within the northeastern region of the state of Texas, and named for pioneer David Hopkins. The City of Sulphur Springs is the government center.

Originally promoted as a health resort, Sulphur Springs was home to more than 100 natural springs in the 1870's. In addition to the "medicinal benefits," the springs were greatly beneifical in establishing Hopkins County as an agricultural force, with the main crop being cotton by 1930.

Dairy Capital of Texas.

With the introduction of a milk processing plant in 1937, the shift from cotton to dairy farming began. By the 1950's Hopkins County was recognized as the Dairy Capital of Texas and remained so until approximately 1990.
