OUR CHAPTER
ABOUT SARAH POUND
Sarah Dunbiben Ward
was born January 27, 1838, in Hinds, Mississippi, to Charles W.F. Ward and
Mississippi Terrell Ward. Sarah married Dr. Joseph McKegg Pound on November 13,
1853, in Mississippi. In 1854, they moved to Texas becoming one of the four
founding families of Dripping Springs. Another founding family was John Moss
and his wife, Indiana "Nannie" Ward Moss. Nannie, Sarah's older sister, is
credited with naming the town of Dripping Springs, Texas.
Dr. Joseph and Sarah Pound raised their nine children (two died
in childhood) in their log house. Sarah was a strong pioneer woman in every
sense of the word. Their farmstead was opened to the community to be the first
schoolhouse, medical office, church sanctuary, and hospital. The Pounds were
responsible for numerous civic contributions in providing medical care,
supporting efforts for education, and assisting military veterans and their
families. Sarah died on May 2, 1915, in Dripping Springs, Texas. The Dr. Pound
Historical Farmstead was added to the National Register of Historic Places in
1995.
