HISTORICAL PRESERVATION

The Mary Tyler Chapter is over one hundred years old and made history as we dedicated our first DAR Historical Marker. The marker was placed at the Goodman-LeGrand Home and Museum at our Silver Tea held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010. The DAR Historical Marker was placed in honor of Revolutionary War Patriot Benjamin Goodman, whose efforts aided in the establishment of the United States of America. His descendants, Sallie Goodman LeGrand and Etta Goodman, were active members of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass read a proclamation at the dedication ceremony, proclaiming May 11, 2010, as “The Mary Tyler Chapter, NSDAR--Day” in the city of Tyler, Texas. In addition, the Mary Tyler Chapter dedicated a bench on the front porch of the mansion in honor of chapter member and Texas State Regent Joy Hagg.   An historical tree was also planted on the grounds of the mansion.

The Goodman Home has been a Texas Historic Landmark since 1964 and was the first property in Tyler to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Donations from the 2010 Mary Tyler Chapter Silver Tea were directed to the Restoration Fund of the Goodman-LeGrand Home and Museum and also to the Literacy Council of Tyler. Our members also brought children’s books which were donated to the Literacy Council of Tyler.
