PROJECTS

President General's Project

Since 1983 each President General has chosen a particular project which is then approved by the Continental Congress. The Mary Tyler Chapter fully supports the worthwhile projects of the National Society undertaken by each administration.

TXDAR Revolutionary Grave Marker

There are over 40 Revolutionary War patriots who are buried in Texas. The Mary Tyler Chapter has enthusiastically supported the state project to place an obelisk on Cenotaph Hill, at the State Cemetery in Austin, honoring Revolutionary War patriots buried in Texas. In addition, our chapter is a major supporter of the "Restoring of the Registro of Stephen F. Austin's Old 300".

TXDAR and the Governor’s Mansion Restoration Fund

Following the devastating fire at our Governor’s Mansion in June of 2008, Texas First Lady Anita Perry founded the Governor’s Mansion Restoration Fund to restore the 152 year old Texas Treasure. TXDAR is delighted to partner in the fundraiser with the Governor’s Mansion Restoration Committee to restore Texas’ Front Porch at the mansion. The Mary Tyler Chapter has supported this fundraiser with donations and by purchasing Governor’s Mansions pins.

Texas First Lady Anita Perry was the special guest at the TXDAR State Conference and at the TXDAR reception in Houston.

TXDAR Quilts for Scholarships

The Mary Tyler Chapter supports the Texas State Society in fundraising efforts. “Quilts for Scholarships” is part of the Texas State Society projects. Chapter member Serena Vrnak quilted a beautiful quilt square for the Mary Tyler Chapter which is shown pieced together with blocks made by chapters from all across the state. Funds raised from the quilts are used for scholarships.

Community Service Awards

The Community Service Awards Committee was established by the National Board of Management in April 1995 as a way members of the community may be considered for DAR recognition at the chapter and state levels. This award recognizes worthy residents, from a variety of walks of life, for voluntary achievements in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic, historical, and citizenship endeavors, or in environmental conservation. Traci Kenner is the recipient of the 2010 Mary Tyler Chapter Community Service Award.

National Day of Prayer and NSDAR Day of Prayer

The Mary Tyler Chapter actively participates in the National Day of Prayer and the NSDAR Day of Prayer. Members pray for our nation in prayer circles at meetings, luncheons, and observances at the Tyler Rose Garden.

Literacy

Each year the Mary Tyler Chapter hosts a Silver Tea in one of Tyler’s beautiful historic homes. A silver bowl is placed in which members and guests donate money for the Literacy Council of Tyler. Mary Tyler Chapter members also provide children’s books for donation to the Literacy Council.
