Alexander Hodge Chapter NSDAR

About Us

In October 2010, the Alexander Hodge Chapter NSDAR organized with 18 members who chose its name because Hodge is the only veteran of the American Revolution who settled and is buried in Fort Bend County.

Alexander Hodge was born in Pennsylvania in 1760 and eventually moved to South Carolina. When he was 18, Hodge volunteered to serve the cause of American independence with the “Swamp Fox,” Francis Marion’s South Carolina Brigade. Alexander Hodge later moved his family to Arkansas where he met and befriended Stephen F. Austin, the father of Texas.

Alexander Hodge SAR and DAR membersHodge moved his family to Texas in 1825, where he was prominent among the “Old Three Hundred” settlers. He received a land grant in 1828 from Stephen F. Austin, named Hodge’s Bend. Hodge’s Bend Cemetery is currently the resting place for Hodge and many of his descendants, and remains a historical site in Sugar Land. The first grave in Hodge’s Bend Cemetery was that of his wife, Ruth, who died in 1831. Alexander Hodge was buried in the cemetery in 1836. Alexander Hodge Chapter members visit his grave annually to honor our namesake.

Our meetings include fellowship time and a featured speaker or program related to education, conservation, citizenship, patriotism, and veterans. We conduct various projects throughout the year to support Fort Bend County and Houston-area veterans and the needy of our community. Many of our members work full or part time and are active in other service and volunteer organizations in our community.
