Chapter History

Elizabeth Gordon Bradley Chapter NSDAR was organized as a bicentennial project of the Henry Downs Chapter NSDAR. It was suggested that the new chapter meet in the mornings since Henry Downs Chapter NSDAR met in the late afternoon. This would allow young mothers to attend the meetings while their children were in school.

Sara Evans and Urena Johnson accepted the challenge to find enough members to qualify for the formation of another chapter. They finally found thirty-six who either proved their ancestries in order to join or who transferred into the infant chapter from Henry Downs Chapter NSDAR.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was encouraging new chapters to select a woman patriot for the name of their chapter. The name of Sara Evans' ancestor, Elizabeth Gordon Bradley, was selected.

The organizational meeting took place at the home of Sara Evans on Tuesday, October 15, 1976. It was a very impressive meeting with the attendance of Mrs. A. Art Williams, Jr., the TSDAR registrar; Mrs. Robert H. Parkinson, organizing regent; Mrs. Chester A. Howell, chapter regent of Henry Downs Chapter NSDAR; and Mrs. Urena Johnson, chapter registrar of Henry Downs Chapter NSDAR.

Elizabeth Gordon Bradley Chapter NSDAR has grown to about one hundred members who live throughout the United States. Our chapter works on national, state, and chapter committees. We strive to provide historical, educational, and patriotic services to our communities.

Elizabeth Gordon Bradley

We are honored that our chapter is named after Elizabeth Gordon Bradley. One of her descendants, Sara Campbell Norwood Evans, was our organizing and honorary regent.

Elizabeth Gordon was born on May 4, 1730, in Williamsburg Township, South Carolina. The daughter of Mary and Roger Gordon, she probably grew up knowing her future husband, Samuel Bradley, and his family. Samuel was born on February 6, 1723, also in Williamsburg Township, South Carolina. He was the son of James and Mary Witherspoon Bradley.

Elizabeth Gordon and Samuel Bradley were married on February 5, 1750. They had three girls and four boys. All but two or three of her children preceded Elizabeth in death.

Elizabeth aided the American Revolution by making clothing and furnishing food and supplies to the soldiers. She used her home as a "back" hospital for the wounded. Following Samuel's death on September 3, 1778, she continued the patriotic activities they had begun together. She also managed their large estate for the next 19 years.
