Welcome to Coushatti Trace Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution Willis, Texas |
Coushatti Trace Chapter of the NSDAR derived its name from twenty-five Coushatti Indian families who lived north of the Red River, having migrated from Alabama in 1793. Indian trails, such as the Coushatti Trace, became the pathway of the early Anglo-American pioneers. The Lower Coushatti Trace affected the settlement and growth of Montgomery County. Coushatti Trace Chapter, NSDAR, was organized February 6, 1981, with twelve organizing members, of which three were or became State Outstanding Juniors. They were Christene McKenzie, Melinda Kammeyer, and Carol Hicks. The chapter began with a high commitment to education, securing a DAR Good Citizens Scholarship the first year. From this beginning, two endowed chapter scholarships have awarded over $22,000 to graduating seniors. NSDAR schools have been supported through monetary donations, pennies, and soup labels. The DAR Service for Veterans Committee gives hundreds of dollars and hours to the Veterans Medical Center and Conroe VA Clinic. Great effort has been made in promoting DAR's American Indians Committee through historical and cultural programs from pioneers to space. Members have abstracted over 30,000 pages of unpublished material for the NSDAR Library, resulting in chapter awards from NSDAR and TSDAR. We have had recipients of the TSDAR Outstanding American History Teacher Award, TSDAR Medal of Honor Award, and TSDAR Community Service Award. Through the years we have had members serving in both national chairmanships and vice-chairmanships. Our 10th anniversary included Honorary President General Patricia Shelby as our speaker, and our 25th anniversary included Melinda Kammeyer, national chairman of the DAR School Committee. Coushatti Trace celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2011. We strive to see that our flag continues to fly by presenting schools with flag codes and programs. Members preserve our motto: "God, Home, and Country" |
