The Alexander Love Chapter in
Houston Texas was organized in 1923 by a group of ladies who felt the need to
pursue an active participation in patriotic work. A hospital for disabled
World War I veterans located at Camp Logan (now Memorial Park) offered the
ladies the volunteer service they were seeking. Several meetings were held
before the October 19,1923, meeting at the First Christian Church in Houston,
Texas, when the Alexander Love Chapter NSDAR was formally chartered. Mrs. Rowan
and Mrs. McFarland were recognized as the co-founders.
A motion was made and carried that
the chapter be named after Alexander Love who was the Revolutionary South
Carolina ancestor of 10 chapter members of the Sterling Family.
Seventy-two ladies were charter members of the chapter including a past State
Regent, Mrs. I. B. McFarland ; a past State Chaplain, Mrs. H. S. Renick;
and past State Historian, Mrs. W. A. Rowan.
The
Chapter Colors Blue and White.
The
Chapter Motto Add Honor to Ancestral Honor.
The
Chapter Flower Cherokee Rose.
The Alexander Love Chapter has continued
a strong tradition of member service to NSDAR and TXDAR since our organization
in 1923. Our membership surpassed 200 in 2006. We have an Evening Committee
that meets seven times a year. Our day chapter meetings are held the second
Thursday of the month at noon, September through May. We invite ladies to
contact
us who are interested in supporting an organization steeped in patriotism,
service to education and dedicated to the preservation of our American
heritage, especially in our Houston area. This is the tradition of Alexander
Love Chapter NSDAR.
