JOSIAH BARTLETT

The Josiah Bartlett Chapter NSDAR is named in honor of the ancestor of Organizing Regent Margaretta Bartlett Casey (Mrs. Walter Thomas Casey). Josiah Bartlett was born in Amesbury, Massachusetts, on November 21, 1729. He worked as a physician in Kingston, New Hampshire. In 1775, he became commander of a militia during the Revolutionary War. Bartlett took part in the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He was a member of the Continental Congress, serving on the committee that drafted the Articles of Confederation, and later was a delegate to the New Hampshire convention for the adoption of the Constitution. He served as a judge on the Court of Common Pleas, was Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, and Governor of New Hampshire for four years. Josiah Bartlett died on May 19, 1795, in his home at Kingston, New Hampshire. He is buried in Plains Cemetery, Kingston, New Hampshire.
