George
Blakey, for whom the DAR Chapter of Bonham, Texas, was
named, was born
in Culpepper County, Virginia, on November 22, 1749. He died
in “Rural Choice,” Logan County, Virginia, on September
8, 1841. On January 20, 1787, he married Margaret Whitsett
(daughter of William and Ellen Menees Whitsett) in Henry
County, Virginia. George's parents were Thomas Blakey and
Ann Haden, who were married in 1746; his grandparents were
Churchill and Sarah Blakey.
George
Blakey was in numerous battles of the American Revolution
and his tombstone in Russellville, Kentucky, Cemetery bears
this inscription, “Just as the sun was seeing all the
snowy hills of Trenton,
he with Washington entered the city."
The brick home he built in Logan County, Kentucky, in 1790 to 1795, still stands and his descendants are
scattered to the four corners of the globe.
Excerpts written by Mrs. Paul Keahey of Bonham, Texas,
