Our chapter has consistently recognized
DAR's American History Essay Contest and Good Citizen Contest winners
with certificates, medals, pins, and often scholarships. Constitution
Week has been celebrated with bell-ringing ceremonies, city
proclamations, and luncheons.
Chapter winners who went on to win
at the State Conference include 1982 DAR Membership Commission First
Place Award; 1999 Good Citizen winner won first place in Texas, and 1999
Community Service Nominee won first place in state for establishing a
public library in Normangee. Because of the personal connection wit the
Normangee Library, the chapter has been loyal in its support. We
annually contribute several books, including DAR Patriot Indexes to help
prospective members. The chapter was recognized at 1989 Continental
Congress with a first place Print Media award.
For many years,
the Chapter held a George Washington Tea at which American History and
Good Citizens Contest winners were recognized and honored. Genealogical
workshops have also been held and these resulted in prospective members
completing their papers.
In addition, the Chapter has presented
U.S. flags to schools, the public library, various businesses, city
hall, VFW, as well as recognizing students for reciting the Pledge of
Allegiance to the Flag each morning at school.
Because chapter
members live very near the Old San Antonio Road (also called the El
Camino Real Road), there are many historical programs on this topic. In
1991 and 1992, members rededicated the Old San Antonio Road Markers. The
members copied personal and county records and these have been compiled,
bound, and submitted to NSDAR and other libraries.
