Stella Corcoran
White established the Carl, Stella and Michael White/Eliza
O'Niel and Michael O'Niel Daughters of the American
Revolution Scholarship Fund. Annual scholarship recipients
were chosen by a DAR committee of six members who served
staggered two-year terms. Eligibility requirements include
test scores, participation in school activities, community
service, self-determination, and need.
In
2001, the Captain William Sanders Chapter voted to
relinquish the trusteeship of these funds to the Port Arthur
Higher Education Foundation, which was established in 1973
to promote the arts, sciences and programs of Port Arthur
College, now Lamar State College-Port Arthur. The District
Court of Jefferson County approved the chapter's request to
transfer the trusteeship of nearly half a million dollars
into their fund. The Port Arthur Higher Education group is
headed by a fifteen member board of directors and
administers over $3,000,000. in scholarships to deserving
students. The
Foundation benefits Lamar State College-Port Arthur.
Scholarship winners may use their $1,000 award to attend any
accredited college or university they select. The
eligibility requirements are the same.
Scholarships
remain our chapter's largest commitment to our community.
Each year, we give $20,000 to scholars who are selected from
five area schools; Port Arthur Memorial, Monsignor Kelly,
Nederland, Port Neches, and Sabine Pass High Schools. We
honor the scholars each spring with a reception for the winners,
their parents and school counselors.
This board also selects the
scholarship winners from the applications received each
year.
Mrs.
White's legacy will continue in perpetuity.
