McAdams Chapter, DAR Accepted by National DAR

October 16 was an important day for the Captain John McAdams Chapter, DAR, Madisonville.  Sixty-five persons arrived in heavy rains for the memorial and organizational program in the coffee shop of the Corral Cafe.

Highlight of the meeting was a telephone call to the National DAR Board of Directors which was in session in Washington, D.C., to receive verification that the chapter here was accepted as a new DAR chapter.  The call was made by Mrs. Opal Samuel, regent, who reported to the national board that the organizational meeting here was held with a majority of the organizing members present.  Mrs. Samuel's call immediately followed the installation of officers.

As members and guests arrived, Mrs. Robert McCann had charge of the guest book and was assisted by Miss Dorothy McAdams and Mrs. Reba Burtis in the registration.  Mrs. Eva Jean Callaham, treasurer, took care of the buffet ticket sales with Mrs. Marcella Samuel assisting.

Mrs. Lockie Thompson and her committee, Mrs. E. P. Thomas, Miss Dorothy McAdams, Mrs. Bernice Heath and Mrs. Reba Burtis were responsible for decorations and also assisted with hostess duties.  The luncheon tables were decorated with United States flags.  The center of interest at the speaker's table was built around the McAdams Revolutionary sword.  An arrangement of red roses and white stock was flanked by the United States and DAR flags.  All appointments were in the patriotic theme.

Mrs. Opal Samuel, chapter regent, gave the welcome and invocation.  The chapter ritual and flag salute were led by the chaplain, Mrs. Inez Heath.

Mrs. Johnnie Braddy of Fort Worth introduced the State registrar, Mrs. Walter C. Pool of Fort Worth, who installed the officers selected for the year.

Mrs. Lucille Garrison gave thanks for the meal.  After the luncheon, each guest introduced herself giving her name and hometown.

The program continued with Mrs. Kelly McAdams giving the historical background of the John McAdams who served in the Revolutionary War.  She showed pictures that she and her husband had taken on a recent trip to South Carolina of Little River Burial Grounds where some members of the family have markers.  Pictures were shown of a marker place for John McAdams Sr. in Walker County.  A large marker was also placed in the McAdams Cemetery by the Kelly McAdamses in memory of this John and his wife, Martha Rogers, listing their children.

Mrs. Braddy also introduced Miss Marion Day Mullins who is chairman of State Microfilming of Genealogical Records.  She told of Miss Mullin's dedicated service to DAR work through the year and of her portrait hanging in the DAR headquarters in Washington, D. C.

Miss Mullins presented the book, "In Washington" for the library along with DAR handbooks for the new officers and other helpful material in carrying on the chapter work.  She told of some of the DAR accomplishments during the years and of the many historical places in this country and in our own state that members should visit and become familiar with that they might help others to better love and appreciate their country and heritage.

Love gifts were presented to Miss Mullins and Mrs. Pool by the chapter.  The meeting closed with a prayer led by Mrs. Nita Glynn McAdams Taylor of Houston.

Mrs. Marcella Samuel and Mrs. Eva Jean Callaham presented the speakers with complimentary issues of the Madisonville Meteor which carried a story of the organizational work of the new chapter.  Copies of the paper were made available to out of town guests as long as they lasted.

Mrs. Melba Frossard and Mrs. R. F. Synwolt, Jr. invited chapter members and guests to see the library display and genealogical opportunities already offered at Madison County Library.
