Karen Goodin receives recognition from the The National Trust for her picture of the Lake Creek School.
Last summer 2010, on a lark, a whim and a full tank of gas, Karen Goodin set out to take some meaningful photos of Armstrong County. Little did she know that the iconographic photos she was taking of the Armstrong County Museum's Lake Center School would compel her to widen her travel plans.
As a member of Thankful Hubbard Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Karen searched the Texas landscape identifying places meaningful to both her and to the mission of the DAR. Karen uploaded her photos onto the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) web site as part of their "This Place Matters" photo initiative.
"This Place Matters" is designed to engage the public in identifying, preserving and celebrating places that matter to them. The Texas Society DAR Historic Preservation Committee adopted this NTHP initiative as a three year project in 2009 offering Texas DAR chapters a way to participate. Chapter members simply take a picture in front of a place they care about, holding the sign "This Place Matters" and upload the pictures to the NTHP web site.
"people think that historic preservation is only about preserving the homes of presidents, or the rich and famous. Or that some secret, high and mighty committee sits around somewhere making determinations of what is "Historic" and what is "worthy" of being saved. In fact, nothing is further from the truth. Individuals, neighborhoods and communities should decide what "matters" - whether it's a gas station, a cemetery or a neighborhood saloon. Organizations like the National Trust for Historic Preservation exist to help that process, to empower people to hold discussions about their heritage, the places they hold dear and what kind of community they want to live in now and in the future - and to give them the support and tools to save those places they identify as important." - National Trust for Historic Preservation
Because of outstanding participation by chapters during the first two years of this project, Texas DAR is now the National Trust's largest Flickr group with over 260 photos uploaded. These photos can be viewed by visiting the NTHP web site; preservationnation.org and searching for Texas DAR Flickr group or going to this Flickr link: http://www.flickr.com/search/groups/?q=Texas+DAR&m=pool&w=941279%40N22&s=rec
The National Trust is assisting TSDAR in recognizing outstanding pictures taken by Texas Daughters. At the TSDAR State Conference held in Dallas in March 2011, Karen Goodin received recognition from the NTHP for her picture of the Lake Creek School, a one room school house restored by the Armstrong County Museum, Claude, Texas.
In an effort to encourage heritage tourism, the TSDAR Historic Preservation Committee's THIS PLACE MATTERS winners receive prizes from historic destinations across the state. Karen's photo of The Lake Center School was awarded with the National Trust's Buffalo NY Conference Pass, as well as TSDAR's grand prize of a 2 night stay at Galveston's historic Hotel Galvez.
Congratulations Karen - and Happy Trails!
O.Henry teacher Serena McMillion receives DAR Award
The Thankful Hubbard Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution of Austin proudly recognized Serena McMillon of O.Henry Middle School as their recipient of the NSDAR Outstanding Teacher of American History Award for 2011.

Ms. McMillon is an 8th Grade Social Studies teacher and History Department Chair at O.Henry. From the letters of recommendations received, it was obvious that she is well respected by her peers and students. Their enthusiastic comments place her in the elite class of teachers who are committed to motivating students to understand the importance of our heritage in their classroom instruction and everyday life. As 8th grader Summer Leigh wrote in her letter of support, "You can't NOT learn in Ms McMillon's class. She always makes sure that we understand the material and makes learning fun." Serena definitely met and surpassed all the criteria outlined by the National Society of DAR to be chosen for this prestigious award.
Web hyperlinks to non-DAR sites are not the responsibility of the NSDAR, the state organizations, or individual DAR chapters.

Thankful Hubbard has been awarded the page of the month for December 2006.
