Ol' Shavano Chapter

San Antonio TX

Ol' Shavano Chapter is the third of five DAR chapters organized in San Antonio.
It was chartered 14 November 1958.
Chapter meetings are monthly September thru' May.

The Ol' Shavano settlement, from which this chapter takes its name, was the first day stage stop traveling north from San Antonio on the Old Spanish Trail.
The stagecoach stop was located at a bend in Leon Creek and was near the site of the winter campgrounds for the Shavano Indians.

Chapter members are active volunteers in the community. They teach English as a second language; do volunteer work in schools, libraries and hospitals, including the Audie Murphy Memorial VA Hospital. They are docents for the National Park Service Historic Missions Trail and promote the study and preservation of colonial Texas history. Some members have worked on a data entry project for the National Park Service and for the San Antonio Library as well as various computer projects for DAR on the national and state levels.

Members participate in the Alamo Pilgrimage during Fiesta Week and in the Siege of Bexar memorial ceremony as well as attend memorial services at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Memorial Day, the 4th of July and Veterans' Day. Chapter members have  registered Spanish American War nurses in the Women in Military Service to America Memorial computer registry.

Chapter members contribute to the Soldiers and Family Assistance Centers, the Fisher Houses and DAR Project Patriot in support of our men and women in our Armed Services.

The Chapter honors our members who are veterans of the United States Armed Services: 1 Army, 2 Navy veterans, one of whom served during WWII, 2 Air Force veterans, both having served during Viet Nam and one who served during Gulf War I as well, and 1 Marine.

Each year the Chapter donates Texas history books to our public schools and promotes school activities associated with American History, Constitution Week, Junior American Citizens, the DAR Good Citizen contest and High School ROTC awards for outstanding students.

Each year, the chapter participates in a community conservation project as well as genealogy research at the San Antonio Library.  The chapter supports DAR schools, the DAR Library, DAR Junior Membership, Children of the American Revolution and the renovation of Constitution Hall with the purchase of a chair for the concert hall.

The Chapter is participating in the Texas DAR Project to locate, photograph and repair the El Camino Real highway markers installed by the Texas DAR in 1918. The granite markers were placed approximately every 5 miles across the state from the Sabine River to the Rio Grande .
