 Naturalization Ceremonies

The Mary Tyler Chapter participates in naturalization ceremonies at the Tyler Federal Court House throughout the year. Members welcome hundreds of new citizens each year and present each new citizen with a U.S. Flag, Flag Code Brochure and Flag Bookmark. The Mary Tyler Chapter has been participating in naturalization ceremonies since 1948.

Constitution Week

The Mary Tyler Chapter promotes patriotism during Constitution Week with a Constitution Week Luncheon, including Constitution Week Proclamations signed by the governor of Texas and by the mayor of Tyler. In addition, the chapter presents a patriotic song and flag performance at the University of Texas at Tyler with the Sons of the American Revolution. Our chapter also sponsors patriotic library displays, partners with the Tyler Independent School District to promote Constitution Week activities, sponsors commemorative bell ringing, and provides special reading activities with children.

Flag Day

The Mary Tyler Chapter promotes patriotism by conducting the Flag Day Ceremony for the city of Tyler. All attendants are presented miniature United States flags. Our chapter also partners with the Sons of the American Revolution in joint Flag Day-Flag Retirement Ceremonies.

DAR Project Patriot

The DAR Project Patriot Committee is the official Daughters of the American Revolution committee that supports America's service personnel in current conflicts abroad. The Mary Tyler Chapter sends many boxes of comfort items to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Community Service Awards

The Community Service Awards Committee was established by the National Board of Management in April 1995 as a way members of the community may be considered for DAR recognition at the chapter and state levels. This award recognizes worthy residents, from a variety of walks of life, for voluntary achievements in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic, historical, and citizenship endeavors, or in environmental conservation.

National Day of Prayer and NSDAR Day of Prayer

The Mary Tyler Chapter actively participates in the National Day of Prayer and the NSDAR Day of Prayer. Members pray for our nation in prayer circles at meetings, luncheons, and observances at the Tyler Rose Garden.

Literacy

Each year the Mary Tyler Chapter hosts a Silver Tea in one of Tyler’s beautiful historic homes. A silver bowl is placed in which members and guests donate money for the Literacy Council of Tyler. Mary Tyler Chapter members also provide children’s books for donation to the Literacy Council.

American History and Christopher Columbus Essay Contests

The American History Committee was created to promote American history by honoring significant historical people, places, dates, and events. Each year the Mary Tyler Chapter sponsors an essay contest for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Winners from each grade level are recognized at the George Washington Student Awards Tea in February, and these winners move to state-level competition. The Mary Tyler Chapter also sponsors the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest for high school students.

DAR Good Citizens

The DAR Good Citizens program and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools. Each year, the Mary Tyler Chapter honors DAR Good Citizens chosen from area high schools at the George Washington Student Awards Tea in February. Each Good Citizen is presented an award, while one Good Citizen is selected as the grand prize scholarship recipient.

ROTC

Every year the Mary Tyler Chapter honors outstanding ROTC students with scholarships and medals.

Children of the American Revolution
