Greetings from the Chapter Regent

I extend you greetings from the John Hogg, Sr., Chapter, located at beautiful Holly Lake Ranch.  John Hogg, Sr., was a patriot who served from South Carolina.  He was the great-grandfather of the twenty-fourth governor of Texas, James Stevens Hogg, who began his political career in Wood County.

We were organized June 26, 2006, with twenty members.  By January 1, 2007, we had twenty-five.  As of now, we have thirty-two members and eight prospective members.

Even though we are a fledgling chapter, we have done much to be proud of.  We celebrated Constitution Week with a Proclamation from Governor Perry; we visited veterans in nursing homes and presented them with gifts at Christmas and cards on Valentine's Day; we took part in the programs held at the Greater Hawkins Veterans Memorial Park; and we presented a senior from Hawkins High School with the Good Citizens Award.  In addition, Helen Jones Smith was the state winner of the DAR Service for Veterans Award.  In the coming year, we will continue to support education and honor our veterans and those still serving in the military.

Holly Lake Ranch

Holly Lake Ranch is located 100 miles east of Dallas,Texas, 98 miles west of Shreveport, Louisiana, 30 miles north of Tyler and 10 miles north of Hawkins.  The natural beauty of this East Texas forest has been preserved and development has been planned to blend with the environment.

Each season has its own unique beauty at Holly Lake Ranch. Early spring brings the dogwood trees and wildflowers, which offer breathtaking vistas. In summer, the lush green forest provides a wondrous back drop for the crystal-clear, spring-fed lakes. Fall produces scenery that is a painter's dream with shades of yellow, orange, red, and brown amongst the green pines. Winter has its own charm, especially when a blanket of snow covers the ground.
