Welcome to Port
Arthur. We're located in on the upper Gulf
Coast of Texas in south Jefferson
County, with our neighbors Sabine Pass, Groves,
Nederland, and Port Neches. Our area offers a variety of history,
recreation, fishing, hunting, bird watching, and other
attractions for the entire family.
We have plenty of
lodging and restaurants that lean on the French, Dutch,
Italian, Hispanic, and Vietnamese cultures for a variety
of tastes and traditions. These heritages also influence
the festivals, languages, and occupations of the people of
these communities in and around Port Arthur.
Shipping is a most important element of
our area. We
have a deepwater port with berths for six ships at once.
The refineries and chemical plants are essential to our
economy. Most have docks on the Neches River, generating
jobs for the workforce of a combined population that
totals 110,000. Commercial fishing fleets,
along with sport fishing and hunting, employ many workers.
Dry docks and boat/ship/barge repair services have a
special place in our economy. We have rice farming, beef
cattle, crawfish farms, and offshore drilling rigs in the
area as well.
Parks--we have plenty.
The Sea
Rim State Park at McFaddin Beach on Highway 87 has RV
hookups, camping on the beach, a museum, a concession store,
nature trails, a boardwalk in the marsh, airboat tours and a
bath house with showers and restrooms.
Sabine
Pass Battleground State Historical Park includes RV
hookups, boat ramp and the
Dick
Dowling Monument on the site of the Civil War Confederate
battle; Pleasure Island Recreation Complex has a boat
launch, fishing areas, public restrooms, a playground, a 40-unit RV park, "The Palms",
which is a new professional
public golf course.
Children's Playgrounds are
located in Port Arthur at Rose Hill; in Port Neches at
Tugboat Island (the largest community built playground in
Texas); Doornboos Heritage Park is in
Nederland and Lion Park is located in Groves.
Within our area, there are four hospitals,
along with the centrally located Southeast Texas Regional Airport with
car rentals. We also offer the acclaimed Museum of the Gulf Coast
featuring southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana sports and
music legends, along with displays, photos, and artifacts
from the prehistoric era, the time of pirates, the Civil War, oil discovery
and production, maritime items and other local interests. The
Texas Artists Museum Society features local
artists. Nederland's Dutch Windmill Museum/Tex Ritter
Museum and Port Neches' La Acadiens Du Texas Museum house
tributes to the French and Dutch settlers of our area.
Groves is home to Snooper's
Paradise, a 40,000 square foot store with European
antiques. We also have a Civic Center with the Visitor's
Center inside, a Music Park that features name performers; a
Little Theatre, and a College Theatre. Central Mall and
Jefferson City Shopping Center, as well as shopping
opportunities from quaint boutiques and shops in each of
these cities, offer a variety of department stores,
cafeterias, theaters, and restaurants.
Our citizens live in moderate to expensive
homes in south Jefferson County, There are four school
districts, and several private schools. Lamar State College-Port Arthur is a growing, vital institution.
We have four
public golf courses, bowling, public boat launches, numerous
churches and houses of worship. The Buu Mon Buddhist Temple
has ceremonies for visitors by appointment, the Queen of
Peace Shrine and Gardens are free for walking and
meditation. A beautiful, sixteen-foot shrine on the grounds

of Guadalupe.
